Collection Procedure:

Serum must be separated from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture. Send serum in a plastic transport tube.

Container/Tube: Red-top tube or gel-barrier tube

  • If a red-top tube is used, transfer the separated serum to a plastic transport tube.

Use:

This test is used to evaluate hirsutism and masculinization in women and testicular function in clinical states where the testosterone-binding proteins may be altered (obesity, cirrhosis, thyroid disorders).

Limitations

A pediatric reference interval has not been established for the direct free testosterone test.
