Specimen Requirements:

Type: Serum and whole blood

Container/Tube: Three 10 mL gel-barrier tubes (preferred), ONE MUST REMAIN UNOPENED, AND two 5 mL lavender-top tubes
  • Gently invert the lavender-top tubes 8 to 10 times immediately to mix specimens with anticoagulant. Centrifuge serum tubes within 45 minutes of venipuncture.

Sample Volume: 1 mL

Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL (Repeat testing is not possible with this specimen volume.)

Storage: Refrigerate the serum tubes and one lavender-top tubes. Store one lavender-top tubes at room temperature for up to 24 hours.

Rejection Criteria:

  • Hemolysis
  • Clotted specimen
  • Specimen diluted with IV fluid
  • Tube not filled with minimum volume
  • Improper labeling

Use:

This test is used to evaluate woman’s health status in early pregnancy; evaluate for anemia, leukemia, reaction to inflammation and infections, peripheral blood cellular characteristics, state of hydration and dehydration, polycythemia, hemolytic disease of the newborn, and ABO incompatibilities.

Test includes: ABO grouping and Rh typing; antibody screen (includes ID and titer of all irregular antibodies detected); CBC with platelet count and differential; HBsAg screen; rubella antibodies, IgG; syphilis serology (if positive, Treponema pallidum-specific test is performed); antigen/antibody screen (EIA) for HIV-1/O/2 with reflex to supplementary differentiation of HIV-1 or HIV-2 antibody. Specimens repeatedly reactive by the screening assay (but negative by the supplementary antibody typing assay) will reflex to qualitative nucleic acid amplification (NAA) for viral RNA. If reflex testing is performed, additional charges/CPT code(s) may apply.
