Kit Contents: 3ml UTM vial, 1 Dual swab package.

Instructions:

PLEASE USE ONLY ONE SWAB- NP Specimen Preferred(smaller swab
preferred if available)

Upper respiratory tract:

I. Nasopharyngeal swab (NP) /Oropharyngeal swab (OP)

Use only smaller (if available) synthetic fiber swab with plastic shafts provided. Do not use
calcium alginate swabs or swabs with wooden shafts, as they may contain substances that
inactivate some viruses and inhibit PCR testing. UFHPL is now recommending collecting
only the NP swab.

  • Nasopharyngeal swab: Tilt patient head back. Insert the. smaller swab into the nostril
    parallel to the palate until resistance is felt upon reaching the Nasopharynx. Leave the
    swab in place for a few seconds to absorb secretions. Rotate swab 10 to 15 seconds. Place
    swab immediately into labeled sterile tube containing the 3 ml of viral transport media.
    Break tip into tube and cap tightly. Double bag specimen.
  • Oropharyngeal swab (e.g., throat swab): Swab the posterior pharynx, avoiding the tongue.

II. Storage

Specimens stored at 2-8°C for up to 72 hours after collection. If a delay in testing or
shipping is expected, store specimens at -70°C or below.

III. Specimen Pick Up

Specimens must be double bagged in a biohazard specimen transport bags.
